Do not delay home management if SCFE/SUFE is suspected.
Stop sport, avoid weight-bearing, and seek urgent medical review for an adolescent limp with hip, groin, thigh, or knee pain.
What parents should know
SCFE/SUFE is a serious hip condition in which the ball of the hip slips through the growth plate. It needs urgent medical assessment because walking on it may worsen the slip.
This guide cannot diagnose SCFE/SUFE or rule out fracture, infection, inflammatory arthritis, or other causes of hip, thigh, knee pain, or limp.
What parents may notice
- Limp or walking with the foot turned outward.
- Hip, groin, thigh, or knee pain.
- Stiffness or reduced hip movement.
- Symptoms may be gradual or sudden.
- In severe cases, the child cannot walk or bear weight.
Practical home support while seeking care
- Stop sport and avoid weight-bearing if SCFE/SUFE is suspected.
- Seek urgent medical review for limp with hip, groin, thigh, or knee pain.
- Do not massage, stretch forcefully, or force hip movement.
- Follow orthopaedic advice strictly after assessment.
Red flags / when to seek urgent medical review
Seek urgent medical review now if any concerning features occur:
- Adolescent limp with hip, groin, thigh, or knee pain.
- Child cannot bear weight or has sudden severe hip, thigh, or knee pain.
- Foot or leg turns outward, or hip movement is reduced.
- Pain after a fall with reduced hip movement.
- Known endocrine condition, obesity, or other risk factors with hip or knee pain.
Important facts for parents
- Knee pain can come from a hip problem.
- This is not a condition for delayed home treatment.
- Early recognition helps reduce the risk of worsening slip and long-term hip damage.
